In the middle of a flash sale, the shop crawls and Auto Scaling launches no instance
Casablanca · AWS account eu-west-3 · the MasterLinux shop · Tuesday 18:20
The MasterLinux shop (boutique.masterlinux.lab) launched its back-to-school flash sale at 18:00:
–50% on all courses, announced by email to 120,000 former students. The site runs behind an
Application Load Balancer, on an Auto Scaling group asg-boutique-web (c5.2xlarge instances).
At 17:58, the target tracking policy (CPU at 50%) raised the desired capacity from 2 to 8. Twenty minutes later, there are still only 2 instances in service, at 97% CPU. The site takes 15 seconds to answer, the ALB returns 504s and carts expire. Every minute costs sales.
The technical manager thinks an account quota has been reached and wants to open a ticket with AWS support; a developer suggests "launching instances by hand".
