Azure outage in France Central: the policyholder portal stays on error 500 although the backup site has taken over
Casablanca · Tamin Salama NOC + Azure regions France Central / France South · Tuesday 09:40
Tamin Salama is a Casablanca insurer (car and home, 310,000 policyholders). Its policyholder
portal espace.taminsalama.ma (claim declarations, PDF certificates, photos of the damage) is
published by Azure Front Door afd-taminsalama in front of two App Services:
app-espace-frcin France Central (priority 1 origin);app-espace-frsin France South, the paired region (priority 2 origin, “hot standby”).
The data lives in Azure SQL (sql-espace-frc, database db-espace), replicated to sql-espace-frs
by the failover group fog-espace, and the documents in the storage account stespacedocs
in RA-GRS. A disaster recovery (DR) drill was “validated” in March.
Since 09:12, France Central has been in a major outage. Front Door has removed the primary origin… and policyholders see “Error 500 — service temporarily unavailable”. Claim declarations for last night's hailstorm in Settat and Berrechid are blocked. The CIO, Mr Benjelloun, wants to “fail everything over now, and delete what is left over there to avoid duplicates”; a colleague suggests pointing the DNS straight at the backup App Service.
You are the on-call cloud engineer (Ilyas), on poste-noc. Access: console-azure (az CLI,
Owner emergency account), bastion-frs (VM in France South, sqlcmd through a private endpoint), and the
SSH console of the backup App Service. Restore the portal in France South, without any avoidable
data loss.
