PDF quote generation: error 500 on large quotes only

Bab Rabat Rénovation, a building contractor in Rabat, produces its quotes from its extranet: the “Download PDF” button calls the Cloud Functions (2nd gen) function generer-devis-pdf (region europe-west1), which assembles the quote, the plans and the site photos into a PDF.

Since the sales reps started attaching high-definition photos (new tablet), large quotes fail: the extranet shows “Error: could not handle the request”. Small quotes go through. A sales rep has to send a 14-page quote to a client at noon. The developer suspects a timeout; a colleague suspects a permissions problem.
